Market Square has a colonnaded market cross rebuilt in 1813 and is surrounded by handsome buildings.
In Victorian times the town was an important staging post for travellers with east-west and north-south routes converging there.
The town grew up around the church and some of the oldest buildings are reasonably close to the churchyard comprising the grammar school founded in 1549.
Ilminster takes its name from the River Ile and the Minster church dating from 1450.
