Our property dates from 1860 when contructed amongst the last of the New Town.
We are Grade 2 Listed which means sadly we cannot install a lift and there s a LOT of stairs great if you are into exercise but not so great if you aren t able bodied.
Also it means no two rooms are the same! And we have original cornices! It is a philosophy we like to continue in her memory and we are in the process of some changes which will take time but we wish to remain true to her memory and keep it original and quirky!.
Eliza had seen that the Ritz in London was founded by Cesar Ritz who liked her had worked his way up and with her sense of humour she couldn t resist calling her hotel The Ritz! She wanted the hotel to remain as true as possible to its heritage and as you look around you will see a sympathetic conversion of an 1860 New Town Town House.
She had vision and was ahead of her time when she converted our buildings from National Coal Board Offices in 1962 to an eclectic hotel with en suite bathroom facilities TVs etc one of the first to do so in Edinburgh.
Our founder was Eliza who had spent her youth in Service from Large Estates to Hotels to private residences.
